school shortly but the principal won't be here. we'll tell you what authorities found in his home. well, welcome to "mornings on 2". i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's monday, september 24th. ear continuing to follow -- we're continuing to follow the details in a deadly crash. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: traffic is moving again and all lanes of southbound 680 in pleasanton. the chp opened up all lanes of the highway about 30 about-- 30 minutes ago. we're next to stoneridge drive, which is where the accident happened. at 4:00 this morning, a car

struck and killed a pedestrian. the chp responded to a call. they did a traffic break and quickly shut down 680 southbound. for an hour and a half, up until 5:30 this morning, traffic was at a complete standstill at the stoneridge exit. drivers heading from the east bay to the south bay were stuck in their tracks and then at 5:30, the chp opened up the far left shoulder to let one lane through. the question for chp investigators this morning, why this pedestrian was in the freeway in the first place? >> it was not a hit and run. the person stayed. >> what did they tell you? >> we can't tell you exactly what happened. >> reporter: now, the chp is not sure if the victim, if the pedestrian was struck by one or multiple cars by 680. one driver did stop.

that's why the chp says that's why they are not considering this a hit and run. the chp is not releasing the identity of the victim. all they are saying at this point, it was an adult male struck and killed. you are looking at southbound 680, you can see traffic moving again. 30 minutes ago, the chp opened it back up. there were a lot of details and a lot of people trying to take the side streets. so there's still some problems in the east bay. for more, let's go to sal. >> you are right. 580 is especially bad because of this. if you are taking 580 -- all of the lanes are open. i cannot recommend something that's gonna be less crowded than the others. all of the lanes are now open as you heard alley say. 84 is not a good alternative. a lot of people have been using

that out of downtown livermore. we've seen a little bit of improvement. if you want to stay on the freeway, i think that's your best shot on 580 because some of the side roads have been jammed up. 680, you can also stay on the freeway. if you can get on the freeway, after the stoneridge area, you might do yourself a little bit of a favor heading out towards fremont. we'll have the complete traffic update coming up. at 7:03. back to the desk. 7:04. developing news a major road in hayward closed now because of a police investigation. it happened at tennyson road right near the south hayward b.a.r.t. station. tara moriarty is there. tara? >> reporter: when officers learned that there was gunfire opened at a bar, they acted

quickly. a car, a man's body now behind those orange barriers. around 1:00 this morning, bar patrons at the dirty bird lounge say the suspect got into a fight with someone and shot him. he left in his sedan and officers tracked him down less than half a mile away. three officers cornered him. they told him to surrendered. instead, he threw it in reverse and was about to run over them. >> the person in this vehicle is already responsible for shooting one person and then drove his vehicle toward the police officers and his actions needed to be stopped. he was clearly a danger to the community. >> reporter: all officers are on paid leave. the person shot at the bar was taken to the hospital and treated with nonlife- threatening injuries.

hayward police are on scene, b.a.r.t. and union police is as well. this intersection near mission and tennyson is shut down. the coroner has not arrived. if you need to get to b.a.r.t., you will not be able to take the tennyson exit. you will be able to take the industrial parkway exit and shoot north. we'll continue to monitor this story and let you know if we have any new developments and if if we learn the identity of the suspect. back to you. in overnight news, police are investigating a fatal shooting. around 10:30, police responded to calls that a man was lying in the street near sycamore and lemon tree way. police say he was dead from a single gunshot wound. police say they are following a few leads but do not have a suspect most description or -- suspect motive or description. police are searching for a driver who knocked down a power

pole in oakland. it happened near midnight. the power is on in the area. the wires have been removed and the road has reopened. 7:06. students showing up for class at montague elementary school, they will be given letters to take home about the arrest of their principal. janine de la vega is live outside of the school with more on the drug charges. >> reporter: good morning. school will begin within the next hour. when it does, the students will be greeted by an interim principal. we haven't gotten a chance -- we haven't gotten a chance to speak to them yet. eric dean lewis has been the principal here at montague school. he's now facing if heny drug charges. a tip was received that he was

involved in drugs. they had an undercover officer and they found meth and other drugs in his home. >> you certainly don't want to see anything like that in a school. and in your neighborhood and stuff? you don't want to have people like that around. i mean, that's a real disappointment. >> reporter: since lewis's arrest, school officials have placed him on leave. we're told that lewis was involved in the antid.a.r.e. program at the school -- anti- d.a.r.e. program at the school. we're also told that letters will be sent home with the students about what happened and he's expected to be arraigned in court today.

back to you. >> thank you. let's check in with sal, once again, for an update on the commute. not a great start for a monday morning. we do have heavy traffic. we've been talking about it since we went on the air at 4:30. now we still have a huge backup on 580 because of an earlier accident on 680 near stoneridge. the crash is gone but the slow traffic will be there for ha lock time. livermore, pleasanton, all the way out to castro valley. there is a small break in the action. we're seeing some improvement, all of the roads are jammed. in is the kind of warning where you wake up and you need to get your routine going faster if you can. let's go out to the bay bridge toll plaza. that's more form normal. san jose is already trying to get some attention here. slow traffic getting into the valley. 101 is also slow, 237 is slow. slow even though we haven't had any major crashes, it is slow.

i want to mention the bay bridge toll plaza, i just happened to look over at one of my monitors here and the traffic at the toll plaza is backed up beyond the macarthur maze. so we have a -- i guess the emeryville camera will show it best. it's very, very slow -- i don't even know why -- this is a little bit longer than usual. we'll follow it. we'll get to the bottom of it and thanks to the control room for pulling those up real quick. steve, what's the weather gonna be like today? >> cooler. thank you for asking. a pretty good fog bank out there. making a move inland. helped along by a system that came in yesterday. it will give us higher clouds and warmer conditions inland. that system is moving along, moving into the colorado rockies. for us it's ushered in cooler air aloft. 50s on the temperatures.

they will come down today. this could be one of the cooler days of the week courtesy of the system, into nevada and heading into the rockies, producing some snow. for us, it's kind of cooled off some of the higher elevations. santa rosa yesterday, 85, concord, 89. livermore, 93 on sunday. san jose, 893. all coming down. so about 6, 7 degrees for some today. especially inland. 50s on the temperatures. they haven't moved at all. antioch is clear. our system is moving out. there's one more thin, little rope up there. there are signs of a warmup toward the end of the week. today, slightly cooler. the fog not going anywhere. for some it will be chilly. kind of muggy yesterday, too. quiet pattern. wednesday, it does look like

we have a huge traffic problem. 580 is a big mess coming out of the tracy area. this is because of an earlier crash. allie rasmus is on the scene to tell us what happened and why the traffic is so slow this morning? >> reporter: well, a pedestrian was struck and killed on interstate 680 just before the stoneridge drive exit. the big question is why was the pedestrian on the freeway? the answer, investigators don't know. they don't know if he was disoriented, under the influence. that's something they are gonna have to figure out. about an hour ago, the chp reopened all lanes of interstate 680. you can see traffic moving. it's a little bit slow right

now. right next to us is the stoneridge drive exit. this is near where the pedestrian vehicle accident happened. it happened at 4:00 a.m. a pedestrian struck and killed. it was not a hit and run. the driver stopped. he was interviewed by the chp for some time. the chp had to do a traffic break and completely shut down 680 southbound for about an hour and a half and it wasn't until -- up until 5:30, traffic was at a complete standstill. drivers heading from the east bay, in some cases drivers heading from the central valley all the way to the south bay were stuck in their tracks including a flight attendant who had to call to let them know she was not gonna make her flight. >> i have been checking the phone and calling in and letting them know so they can

call somebody else in if they need to so those passengers needing connect don't miss their flights. >> we've been sitting here. about an hour and a half. >> reporter: at 5:30, the chp opened the far left shoulder on southbound 680, so they were letting one lane of traffic through. that was the case until they opened the freeway. they are not sure if the victim was struck by one or multiple cars. as we mentioned, one of the drivers did stop and was cooperating. the alameda county coroner said only that it was an adult male that was killed. they are not releasing more information. one of the things that investigators are gonna try to track down is to get some answers about why this man was on the freeway in the first

place. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:32. a san lorenzo span in critical condition after being shot outside of a grocery store. sheriff's deputies say several men confronted the man several afternoon after he left the save right market. there was a fight. several shots were fired. no one else was hurt. a report in the "chronicle request is raising questions about the shooting of this man by police. it says that blueford's fingerprints were on the gun. now, there is a blog that says that statement is not accurate. 7. in just a few showers, san francisco police will answer questions about a recent

police shooting that sparked protests. ktvu's alex savidge is in the city to tell us about a town hall meeting. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning. hoping to ease tensions, chief greg sur will be holing a meeting -- holding a meeting. the chief will be providing more specifics about a police shooting that's sparked heated demonstrations. [ cheers ] >> reporter: after the nonfatal shooting on thursday, there were two demonstrations. protesters smashed windows on businesses, including banks, they even vandalized. protesters were angry about a police shooting where a plain clothes officer opened fire on a 22-year-old parolee on

welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. it's monday, september 4th. a deadly accident on -- a deadly accident on 680 in pleasanton. police shut down the freeway for about two hours early this morning. >> it's opened again this morning but it is a traffic nightmare. sal, what's the latest on what's happening out there? >> we still have heavy traffic and primarily on 580 westbound because of this earlier crash that happened just before 4:00 this morning. a ped was hit and killed near 80 and stoneridge drive -- a pedestrian was hit and killed near 680 and stoneridge drive. the chp was not able to tell

our reporter why that pedestrian was hit. back to you. tennyson road is shut down near mission boulevard. tara mori temperature ahas -- tara morey a -- tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: the suspect's body is still behind the orange bears yers. police say he was gonna use that car to kill them. they tried to get the gunman to surrender. but instead, he gunned the fire so they fired and shot him. and he was killed. witnesses say a fight broke out inside a bar and the suspect ended up shooting a patron. the suspect left in his blue

sedan and officers were able to track him down within two minutes. three officers tried to -- they say -- three officers say he tried to run them over. so they fired. the victim at the bar was treated at a hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. >> a gunshot rings out, it is not only gonna be loud but there's fear and chaos as to who is shooting and who is being shot at. i imagine it was a chaotic and unnerving scene. >> reporter: now, there are several agencies involved here. hayward police, union city and b.a.r.t. all on hand. all three officers have been paid on paid administrative leave. as officers continue to comb the scene here, we'll keep you updated and let you know if they release any other information. we are waiting for the adult malety of the suspect who has been shot and killed here. if you are trying to get to

b.a.r.t., all of these cars are turning around. you can not access it off tennyson. you have to take industrial parkway and up dixon. be aware of that if you have to take b.a.r.t. this morning. live in hayward, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a fatal shooting in antioch is under investigation now. around 10:30 last night, police rushed to sycamore drive and lemon tree way after getting reports of a man lying in streets. police now say the 30-year-old was shot and dead. police say they are following up on leads. but so far no suspects or motives yet. residents say there have been a lot of shootings on their streets and they say gangs and eaty access to guns are a problem. police are searching for a

driver who -- for a driver who shut down the power in the area. a this was a hit-and-run driver. the power is now back on. janine de la vega is live at montague school where the parents are shocked and saddened to hear about the school principal here. >> reporter: parents are gonna be meeting with officials. the principal, eric dean lewis, will be arraigned today on felony drug charges. a department of justice

received a tip there was involved in drugs. and an undercover cop set up a meeting with him and he was arrested thursday afternoon after allegedly involve -- offering the officer drugs. they found meth and other drugs in his apartment. the school has brought in an interim principal. >> it's a very shocking and sad time for the school. i think mostly we will explain to the students that people make bad choices. we have to move on and our job is about teaching and learning. >> district officials have placed lewis on unpaid leave. he was the principal here for the past seven years, we're told the school flourished under his leadership. investigators confiscated his computer here and are looking through it to see if there are

other charges warranted but at this point we're told that this doesn't have to do with the school or the principal. back to you. san jose police arrested a man involved in a recent child abduction case. the -- the 25-year-old man has been arrested for a kidnapping attempt. they also linked him to two other incidents. the oakland housing authority is accepting applications for housing. 8,000 spots are open and applicants have to apply online. the oakland library will help people who don't have internet

access. a lottery will be used to determine who gets on the waiting list. jury selection is scheduled to begin in the trial of deborah madden accused of stealing cocaine from the crime lab. she faces four years in prison if convicted. prosecutors say she stole cocaine from the lab's drug analysis unit. that led to the closure of the facility and the dismissal of hundreds of drug-related cases. sal, you haven't had a chance to catch your breath but you have to help people get to where they need to go. >> one of the things the 680 corridor has been improving a little bit. a little bit. on 680 heading south. 58 -- 580 is heading slow. 8 0 -- i think a lot of people said -- we're gonna avoid this. 880 is super slow heading down to fremont.

and -- 9 -- 90s. a small grass fire started behind burden elementary. no buildings were damaged there. the cause of the fire is under investigation. it is 8:10. firefighters in southern california are battling two wildfires. one is in riverside county in murrieta and has burned more than 150 acres. several homes have been damaged and 200 others are still

threatened. a -- a voluntary evacuation center has been set up. the fire is now 40% contained. a fire in rural san diego has grown to 2,000 acres. it's still only about 10% contained. the fire started yesterday afternoon east of campo. it has destroyed at least 30 homes and ten others. evacuation orders are in place in the area. the cause of both fires are under investigation. 8:10. a san francisco homeless camp that was cleared out last month may be cleared out again today. it's right near the caltrain station. the coalition on homelessness says the homeless there have received two notices to leave that camp. ai -- according to the notice, the camp will be cleared out at 8:30. word leaders are gathering in new york for the u.n. general assembly. the key issue that president obama is expected to address when he speaks tomorrow. a new discovery could lead

pleasanton after an early- morning deadly accident. allie rasmus is out there now to tell us what happened. how a ped -- and also how a pedestrian was killed. >> reporter: well, a pedestrian was struck and killed by an oncoming car on interstate 680 in the southbound lanes. it happened near the stoneridge drive exit. now, over to tur left, you can see that all lanes of southbound interstate 680 are moving again. but earlier this morning, it was a much different story. from 4:00 until 5:30, traffic was at a complete standstill on this stretch of freeway. the chp shut down the highway to investigate that accident. they are not involving it eight -- considering it a hit and

run. >> we have no idea why this person is out here. we'll have to contact the family and find out. >> reporter: divers -- drivers were stuck in tra -- in their tracks, including a san jose flight attendant who had to call their airline -- her airline and let them know. >> this is my last flight before i retire. i know it doesn't happen every day. it's just unfortunate. and i'm just happy i'm not the one involved. >> reporter: the chp around 5:30 had opened up one lane to

let traffic through. a 21-year-old man is in critical condition arbeing shot outside of a market. a group of men confronted the clerk as he was leaving the market yesterday. a fight broke out. several shots were fired. no one else was hurt. the suspect fled the scene.

in just a couple of hours from now, the san francisco police will answer questions at a town hall meeting about a recent meeting that sparked protests. this town hall meeting will be headed -- headed up by san francisco police chief greg suhr. the mighting will get started three hours from now inside the cornerstone church. it was last thursday when a plain clothes officer opened fire on a 22-year-old parolee.

police say they were trying to talk to that young man during a -- during a curfew check. [ cheers ] >> that shooting led to two straight nights of demonstration in the mission. protesters broke windows under businesses. officers suited up in riot greer and eventually they were able to restore order. in the end, no arrests were made. san francisco police's chief mr. come -- san francisco's police chief will come in and answer any questions and address any concerns about the officer-involved shooting. everything gets started at 11:30 this morning. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news.

two roseville police officers now on paid leave after one them shot and killed a suspect. it happened saturday night after police responded to a domestic disturbance call. now, investigators say the 35- year-old man appeared to be in intoxicated and he had a baseball bat. the police officer says he fired when the man tried to fight his part any. we don't know the man's name. we do the name of an airport worker who died at san francisco airport after his truck crashed into a private jet over the weekend. he's identified as 60-year-old yuza onog of daly city. airport officials say they are still investigating what led up to the crash. shocking drug charges against an elementary school principal in the south bay. janine dela vega at the school and parents are now finding out what happened. what do you know, janine. >> reporter: classes began a short time ago, in the last 20 minutes. district officials told me that sometime this morning, depending upon the age of the kids, they are going to explain to the students what happened to their prince pam. that principal's name is eric dean lewis. he will be arraigned on felony drug charges. a spokesperson for the department of justice said they received a tip that lewis was involved in drugs and frequented a dating website. an undercover agent set up a meeting and he was arrested thursday afternoon. authorities say they found methamphetamine, ghp pills and scales at his san francisco

home. the parents we spoke to this morning say they are sad and shocked to hear this has happened. >> i haven't even fully digested what you told me because that's just not -- to me -- i think i'm a pretty good read on people and i would have never suspected. i just don't want to rush to judgment and condemn the pain. he's gonna become a pariah. >> reporter: he was the principal here for seven years, but the district has brought in a new interim principal with 0 years of experience to pry place him -- with 20 years of experience to replace him. he's expected to make a court appearance sometimes today, lewis is. back to you. >> thank you. we want to check in one more time with sal. boy, 880, real backed up.
